Bachelor's Degree (BS) in Mining Engineering
Who is this program for?
The bachelor's degree program in Mining Engineering is perfect for students interested in the extraction and management of mineral resources essential to modern industries.
Program Overview
Mining engineers find, develop, and recover the resources needed to support the daily needs of society from the minerals required to support our daily health to the materials used for roads, buildings, computers, cell phones among most other items used daily. The mining engineering discipline requires a broad range of foundational engineering skills along with the ability to apply specialized technical knowledge in the areas of geotechnical engineering, explosives engineering, ventilation, mine power systems, automation and control, environmental engineering and extractive metallurgy.
The Mining Engineering program at the University of Kentucky is one of only thirteen accredited programs in the United States. The faculty members are well known and highly respected in their specialized areas throughout academia and the industry. Students receive the highest quality education and training from instructors with practical knowledge of the discipline. Hands-on instruction is provided in state-of-the-art laboratories that house modern equipment used in each of the specialty areas of mining engineering. Graduates gain expertise in mine design, environmental sustainability, and resource management, preparing them for careers as mining engineers, safety consultants, or environmental coordinators in sectors like mining, energy, and environmental consulting.
The First Year Engineering Experience
All first-year Engineering majors participate in the First Year Experience Program offered by the Stanley and Karen Pigman College of Engineering. The First-Year Engineering (FYE) Program is designed to orient students to the wide range of engineering disciplines and allows students to take engineering classes on day one. FYE classes present foundational knowledge from all our undergraduate majors and equip students with the confidence to pursue any degree program they are interested in.
