A minor in sociology is ideal for students interested in understanding the social forces that shape behavior, culture, and institutions, and how they impact communities on local and global scales. This program prepares students for careers in social work, public health, education, criminal justice, urban planning, or nonprofit organizations, where a deep understanding of societal dynamics is essential for creating meaningful change.

Program Overview

Sociology emphasizes the study of human behavior and basic social processes. The discipline provides excellent preparation for careers in a variety of occupations and professions including planning and community development, law, public relations and advertising, personnel administration, private business and government administration, health and human services, family relations, criminal justice fields, and others. Courses offered by the department cover a wide range of topics and issues. Areas such as social inequalities, work, organizations, economy, globalization, family, community, environment, crime, law and deviance comprise a large part of the curriculum. Students may also pursue special readings courses and experiential education placements or internships through the department.
