Program Overview
Students who choose our minor in African American and Africana Studies (AAAS) will uncover the centrality of people of African descent to humanity, their centrality to the creation of the modern world and the present-day struggles and triumphs of Black people. An AAAS minor also helps students develop analytical and critical thinking skills, contribute to the diversity of ideas at the University of Kentucky and the larger society, and offers solutions to the problems that challenge and constrict Black life.

What You'll Learn
This minor offers a cultural, historical, and literary base that can strengthen any major in the Humanities or the Social Sciences as well as prepare a student for engaging people of African descent and the issues which affect them. The African American and Africana Studies Program seeks to promote the interest and knowledge of the African diaspora experience through quality teaching and research. Multidisciplinary in scope, AAAS offers a selection of courses in Anthropology, English, History, Geography, Political Science, Sociology, Philosophy, Religion, and Language. Courses affiliated with the Program are listed each Fall and Spring semester on our website and in the University Schedule of Classes under the AAS prefix.
