Minor in Creative Writing

Who is this program for?

Students who are interested in discovering and developing their own voice and style as writers will find the Creative Writing minor an ideal complement to any area of study. Our students come from various majors within Arts & Sciences, including Anthropology, Biology, English, History, and Neuroscience among other programs, and our minor is also a great accompaniment for students in Agriculture, Business, Design, Health Sciences, Performing Arts, and other programs that call for innovative thinking and creative narrative expression.

Program Overview

The Creative Writing minor is a structured group of courses that focuses on the craft of writing and revising fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction. Taught by world-class faculty, creative writing courses emphasize the close reading of literature, the development of creative writing practice and techniques, and constructive critique in workshop settings. Our minors read broadly across a variety of periods, genres, forms, movements, cultures, and media, and work collaboratively to critically analyze texts as they develop the creative and technical skills necessary to conceive, execute, and revise original literary work. Students in the minor develop skills desired by a wide range of employers in careers that require excellent written and verbal communication, analytical skills, and creative critical thinking.

Our faculty members continue to be some of the most sought-after creatives across the Commonwealth of Kentucky and throughout the world. Over the last decade, Creative Writing faculty members have won numerous prizes, been appointed Poet Laureate of Kentucky, authored critically acclaimed novels, creative nonfiction, and books of poetry, and appeared on stages around the globe. Teaching in a traditional workshop is at the heart of our pedagogical work, and the Creative Writing faculty remain committed to helping our students hone their creative voice and share their literary productions through various avenues of publication.
