Program Overview

This minor offers students with a serious interest in Appalachian regional studies an opportunity to pursue a minor concentration to complement a major in one of the university professional or liberal arts programs. This interdisciplinary program enables students to comprehend more fully the historical, environmental, social, economic, health and political context of the Appalachian region in relation to its diverse residents, challenges, contributions, and possible futures.

What You'll Learn

Students will take 18 hours of coursework in a variety of departments, as appropriate. Many courses can count beyond those with a clear Appalachian focus designated in the title; the Director of the Appalachian Studies Program can approve classes with sufficient Appalachian content as relevant.

"While pursuing a minor in Appalachian Studies, the program’s educational versatility enabled me to expand my knowledge regarding mental health in the region. It also highlighted the many complexities of working within the area and allowed me to grow in my competence as a future school psychologist who plans to serve Appalachian people. The minor has a unique perspective to offer students from any discipline and will undoubtedly shape within them a new perspective and appreciation for the people and place as well."

Expand Your Learning

Students who participate in the Appalachian Studies Program have access to several experiential learning opportunities. We offer service-learning courses, summer internships, and a study abroad program in Ireland. Interested students should discuss their plans with the Director of the Appalachian Studies Program.
