Program Overview
This minor offers students with a serious interest in Appalachian regional studies an opportunity to pursue a minor concentration to complement a major in one of the university professional or liberal arts programs. This interdisciplinary program enables students to comprehend more fully the historical, environmental, social, economic, health and political context of the Appalachian region in relation to its diverse residents, challenges, contributions, and possible futures.

What You'll Learn
Students will take 18 hours of coursework in a variety of departments, as appropriate. Many courses can count beyond those with a clear Appalachian focus designated in the title; the Director of the Appalachian Studies Program can approve classes with sufficient Appalachian content as relevant.

This program is part of the Accelerated Master's Pathways program. If you plan to obtain a master's degree, AMP can save you time and money with dual credit hours by signing-up when you have earned between 60-105 credit hours as an undergraduate student at UK.

Expand Your Learning
Students who participate in the Appalachian Studies Program have access to several experiential learning opportunities. We offer service-learning courses, summer internships, and a study abroad program in Ireland. Interested students should discuss their plans with the Director of the Appalachian Studies Program.
