This program is ideal for students who want to become experts in applied mental health care. It’s well suited for those pursuing careers in counseling, psychotherapy, assessment, or consultation—whether in private practice or in settings such as healthcare facilities, community mental health centers, veterans services, rehabilitation agencies, or corporate and organizational consulting, as well as careers in academia.
Program Overview
Through rigorous courses, supervised clinical practica, and mentored research, our students learn the research, psychotherapy, professional, and cultural humility skills needed to address structural challenges and foster the well-being of diverse populations through the science and practice of psychology. Like most scientist-practitioner programs accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) Commission on Accreditation, our PhD program requires 5 to 7 years of full-time study (9-12 credits per fall/spring semester) and completion of a dissertation plus a full-time yearlong internship.
