Graduates can pursue careers as research chemists, pharmaceutical scientists, or university professors, with expertise in fields such as analytical chemistry, organic synthesis, biochemistry, and materials science.
Program Overview
The Ph.D. in Chemistry program offers rigorous training in advanced chemical research, preparing students to become independent scientists and leaders in academia, industry, or government. Students work closely with faculty mentors on cutting-edge research in areas such as analytical, biological, inorganic, materials, organic, and physical chemistry. In addition to deepening their scientific expertise, students develop skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, and scientific communication—equipping them to make meaningful contributions to the advancement of chemical science and its applications in the world.
Areas of specialization in chemistry are analytical, biological, inorganic, materials, organic, and physical. All candidates for the Ph.D. degree are required to serve as a teaching assistant for one semester.

Program Specific Requirements
Fall Applicants: Primary consideration will be given to applications received by December 15. While applications may be considered after that time, most admissions decisions are made by the end of February.
Spring Applicants: Admission to the Ph.D. program for the spring semester is on a case-by-case basis. Please email the director of graduate recruiting at dgr.chemistry@uky.edu for inquiries regarding spring admission.
The materials you need to assemble for application are as follows:
- TOEFL/IETLS Scores* (if an international student).
- Transcripts from current and prior institutions (unofficial documents are acceptable for the application. Admitted students are required to provide official documents).
- Personal statement that includes your research interests (include names of faculty at UK).
- Three letters of reference, to be uploaded by the letter writers.
*If you are unsure whether TOEFL/IETLS scores are required for your application, please contact your Graduate School Admissions Officer.
Our admissions committee uses some unofficial lower limits when evaluating applications. These are not set in stone, and therefore, a score lower than one of these limits does not automatically disqualify an application if other parts of the application are strong. Other important parts of the application include recommendation letters or publications, research/teaching experience, or examples of problem-solving abilities.
The unofficial lower limits are:
- GPA: 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
- TOEFL* (speaking): 20
- IELTS* (speaking): 7.0
- Duolingo* (speaking): 130

The minimums listed above are used by department's Admission Committee. However, the Graduate School at UK also has required minimums including an undergraduate GPA of 2.75 and a 3.00 for any graduate work. Please visit their admissions page for more information.
