Admission Requirements

Post-BSN-PhD Admission Requirements

Note: The Post-BSN-PhD curriculum is under revision by the faculty.

Applicants to the PhD Program (Post-BSN Option) should meet the following requirements:

  • Undergraduate grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 grading scale
  • A bachelor’s degree in nursing from an NLN- or CCNE-accredited program
  • Licensure as a registered nurse in Kentucky or in the state where clinicals will take place
  • Official GRE (general test) scores within the past five years. Recommended scores 600 or above on Verbal and Quantitative portions, and 5.0 or above on the Analytical Writing portion.
  • Three references attesting to the potential of the student for a scholarly career; at least one should be from a doctorally prepared nurse.
  • Example of scholarly written work that demonstrates excellent writing skills and the ability to communicate clearly and logically
  • Goal statement
  • Two faculty interviews arranged as part of the admission process
  • Clinical experience as an RN prior to the first clinical course
  • Admission to the University of Kentucky Graduate School

Applicants who do not meet the above requirements are reviewed individually on a space-available basis.

Post-MSN-PhD Admission Requirements

Applicants to the PhD Program (Post-MSN Option) should meet the following requirements:

  • Graduate grade point average of 3.3 on a 4.0 grading scale
  • Official GRE scores (verbal, quantitative, and analytical); official Graduate Record Exam scores older than five years accepted
  • A master's degree in nursing from an NLN- or CCNE-accredited program
  • Three references
  • Two faculty interviews arranged as part of the admission process
  • Goal statement
  • Admission to the University of Kentucky Graduate School
  • Licensure to practice in Kentucky or in the state in which clinicals will occur (prerequisite to clinical experience)
  • Applicants who do not meet the above requirements are reviewed individually on a space-available basis.
