Research projects include development, implementation and evaluation of curricular content aimed at educating nursing students to assist patients with tobacco dependence treatment using the Rx For Change model. She also directs a study working with county extension agents to develop, pilot and evaluate a population-based intervention designed to examine fidelity, acceptability, practicality, effectiveness and reach of culturally sensitive interventions to motivate smokers in rural Kentucky to seek tobacco dependence treatment.

Dr. Butler's work related to nursing education, leadership, evidence-based nursing practice, college student health and tobacco has been presented in local, state, national and international venues, and has been published in a variety of journals, including the Journal of Nursing Education, Nursing Leadership Forum, Worldviews on Evidence-based Nursing, Family and Community Health, Public Health Nursing, Preventive Medicine, and Policy, Politics and Nursing Practice.

Dr. Butler actively contributes to the nursing profession and community. She is a member of five professional organizations and serves on multiple manuscript review panels. She actively participates in community endeavors at both local and state levels, volunteering her time and talents to improve the health of Kentuckians.
