Podcasting: open source community vs. vendors?
TASC has sponsored a demonstration of Tegrity as a potential solution for faculty searching for a tool to create content for podcasting.  However, I'm wondering why UK is not pursuing the invitation to join an open source community for this solution?  Take a look at the list of schools joining the community developing OpenCast - http://confluence.media.berkeley.edu/confluence/display/WCTREQ

Not shabby, huh?
YouTube vs. UK's iTunes for video clips?
What do you think?  Should we go with the idea of a formal outreach via YouTube?  Take a look at the Chronicle article on this new trend in education:

There's already plenty of individuals at UK using YouTube, including several of our administrative units.  Check out

The problem is that it is difficult to find videos for educational purposes easily in YouTube.  That's why companies like Big Think are growing.  Check it out at http://www.bigthink.com/.  Kind of neat, huh?
University of KY island in Second Life is open to the public!
Today, our wonderful team of UK Second Lifers opened the University of KY island to the general public in Second Life.  Very exciting news and I hope that we have many strange and wonderful adventures in the months to come!

The island is still a little empty, but it's respectable... and it has the wonderful library resources together with the classroom area and sandbox - this kind of collaboration is not what many other universities have on their islands!  Check it out at http://www.flickr.com/photos/alice_burgess/sets/72157603655709610/
Second Life as a place for students to travel abroad
There is increasing evidence that a social networking environment can impact student learning, especially in regards to values, attitudes and beliefs.  Here's an interesting report by the renowned Second Life technology guru who is now working as a visiting professor at the University of Southern California - he writes on the role of virtual worlds in student learning.  Take a look at his comments at http://ondrejka.blogspot.com/2007/12/apoc.html

One of the neat projects that USC is doing with the US State Department is now moving into Second Life.  These researchers contend that student experiences in Second Life's international communities has similar outcomes as for those students who travel abroad in exchange programs.
Introducing Nikki Tarrant-Hoskins, Director of Retention and Student Success

It is with great pleasure that I introduce Nikki Tarrant-Hoskins who is the new IAS Director of Retention and Student Success.  Nikki's background is academic - she's a Ph.D. candidate in English here at UK, has taught for many years (in fact, she's a recipient of the Provost's Teaching Award) and she has worked as an advisor here at UK and at BCTC.  So please give her a warm welcome. Her phone number is 859-257-4984, or you can come on by her new office here in 217 Funkhouser to visit.

As the Director of Retention and Student Success, Nikki's job is to lead the Hobsons EMT Retain implementation team and begin working with the colleges, IR, Enrollment Management and Student Affairs staff to support undergraduate first-year student retention programs and strategies.  With the support of Christian Ecker (Chief Technology Officer in A&S), the Hobsons EMT Retain software should become an important element in communication with our different target audiences over the academic year.  For example, Christian will be working on a redesign of the Early Alert System process to include Hobsons, thereby easing the current manual labor involved in processing the referrals.  Since Nikki will be monitoring system and retention academic indicators in Hobsons, e.g. withdrawal rates, mid-term grades, etc., she will work closely with our colleges to ensure that all undergraduates know their advisors and learn to interact with university personnel.  Nikki will be organizing demonstrations of the software in the coming weeks, and I hope that you can attend.

In the coming months, Nikki and Christian, assisted by the Implementation Team, will develop new retention strategies by determining reasons why students withdraw and working with IAS units and other University offices to establish a strong first-year cohort.  In rolling out the Hobsons EMT Retain software with Christian's leadership, she will be coordinating an intensive awareness program of university resources and services to support your work in promoting academic progress of undergraduate students. This is a big job and I am confident that with your support and encouragement, she is well-situated for this exciting initiative.

Please come by and say hello.
