IBM and SecondLife
Looks like IBM has crafted an environment safe/secure enough that it will continue its explorations in 3D-virtual worlds.  Erica Naone, a blogger at MIT's Technology Review cautions that most businesses will continue to worry about their employees having too much "fun" and that immersion may not be the best thing when an employee is now expected to be multi-tasking constantly... an interesting argument that tends to sway me in the other direction!  Sounds like it would be good for someone to think deeply in a networking interaction instead of constantly working on other things while everyone else is working together.
Millenials and campus spaces
What do you think of the Hub in the Library?  The Study in the Commons? Take a look at what the Engineering students are doing in the commons area in Anderson Building (the glass walled part) vs. the traditionally designed computer lab rooms nearby.  There are computers in front of people in both places in Anderson, but there is significantly different behaviors in the open area with laptops.  Where else are our students gathering and learning from each other outside of class?  It would be interesting to find out.

Check out this blog on the interconnectedness between campus design and student success today.
Congressional Hearing in Second Life
Check it out: the first congressional hearing in Second Life!  The House Committee on Energy and Commerce's Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet set up a video link for a session on "Online Virtual Worlds: Applications and Avatars in a User-Generated Medium." Congressman Edward Markey opened the hearing in real lifein Washington DC and also had his avatar chairing the meeting in Second Life. Four witnesses presented:  Philip Rosedale, founder and Chief Executive of Second Life; Larry Johnson, Ph.D, Chief Executive Officer at the New Media Consortium; Susan Tenby, Senior Manager, TechSoup; and, Colin J. Parris, Ph.D, Vice President, Digital Convergence, IBM.   There are several news stories on this event, but I like this one at Virtually Blind - and especially the comments (you see that someone put the archived video URL there in the comments).
