Serious Games lab for kids in NY - more MacArthur $
 
"Parsons The New School for Design, in collaboration with the non-profit organization Games for Change, has announced the launch of PETLab, the first public-interest game design and research laboratory for interactive media. The initiative was made possible by a $450,000 grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, as part of the foundation’s digital media and learning initiative established in 2006 to help determine how digital technologies are changing the way young people learn, play, socialize, and participate in civic life. In its first year, PETLab will work with Microsoft’s Xbox development platform and MTV’s Think.MTV.com youth-focused online activist community on the development of both learning tools and digital games that explore social issues."

International Human Rights Day - today
This coming year marks the 60th anniversary of the amazing day in 1948 when our UN delegate, Eleanor Roosevelt, finally achieved what she had been lobbying to get for years - the great manifesto for Human Rights signed by leaders from around the world.  Today, December 10th, is the day of celebrating this great achievement.  The United Nation sent out a call to end discrimination and exclusion.  We here at UK should heed the call:
 
On this International Human Rights Day, 10 December 2007, we the Special Procedures mandate holders of the United Nations Human Rights Councilhighlight the need to intensify efforts to combat discrimination and exclusion, which continue to impair the rights, dignity and access to justice of millions of individuals and innumerable communities worldwide. Shakespearean theatre in Second Life
Ted Castronova's quarter of a million grant from the MacArthur Foundation for the new 3D world, Arden, was a good effort -- but just not FUN!  Take a look at the MIT Technology Review's article on Castronova's plans for the future. He promises to try again, and it would be fun to hear what he's doing - maybe we could collaborate with Indiana U on something in SL.  Should we invite him to come to UK to talk with us?

One of the reasons I love my Blackberry PDA
I admit, I'm a addicted to my Crackberry...  and this notice lets us know that RIM is ahead of the game.
 
 
BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion has just announced they are teaming up with airline JetBlue and Yahoo to offer free, in-flight, Wi-Fi web connections for Wi-Fi enabled BlackBerrys (such as the BlackBerry Curve 8320) as well as laptops. The service will allow passengers to access customized Yahoo mail and Yahoo instant messenger services on their laptops.

Kids and 21st Century Skills
Read this article in T.H.E. Journal on perceptions about whether schools are failing kids in 21st century skills... and then ask, are we at UK ready for a student who has 21st century skill preparation?  Can we offer our first-year students a challenging experience that involves their use of problem-solving and creativity? or do we ask them to memorize loads of content?

The Research Scholar and the Digital Age
As we consider the changes to improve the University's general education program, shouldn't we also consider the changes to the faculty member's instructional tools to better reflect the collaborative environment of her/his scholarly environments?  Think about what a good scholar needs to have ready in order to communicate and produce in the digitial age - read Scholarship in the Digital Age - here's an interesting part that seems to mirror the new USP proposal...
 

"Some aspects of a successful new scholarly infrastructure are these:

  • It would support both collaborative and independent research and learning.
  • It would provide relatively easy and equitable access to information resources and to the tools to use them.
  • It would provide scholars in all fields with the ability to use their own research data and that of others to ask new questions and to visualize and model their data in new ways. For example:
    • Scientists – better models of the environment.
    • Social scientists – better ways to analyze social trends.
    • Humanists – new ways to explore and explain culture – and to mine all those books being digitized by Google, Open Content Alliance, and other international projects
  • Open access would prevail, and access to digital content would be permanent.
  • Institutional responsibility for obtaining and maintaining digital content would be clear and would be sustainable.

Wouldn't it be great to have a mashup like this for the University students, faculty, staff and alumni?  Take a look at the article on YourStreet.
 
"When a user opens the site, it detects her location and shows a map of that area, stuck with pins that represent the locations of news stories, user-generated content called conversations, and people who have added themselves to the map. The user can zoom in or out of the map or look at another location by entering a place name or zip code into a search bar.... the site collects 30,000 to 40,000 articles a day from more than 10,000 RSS feeds, mostly from community newspapers and blogs. YourStreet’s natural-language-processing algorithms search news stories and extract geographic information, allowing the system to pinpoint those stories on a map.... If a user clicks to read further, she will be directed back to the source of the information..."
